Become a Consultant

Job Responsibilities

Study consultants are responsible for:

  • Mentoring Homewood undergraduates who indicate a desire to improve academically
  • Scheduling and providing support to assigned mentees on a weekly basis
  • Diagnosing specific academic needs and creating individualized study plans
  • Offering effective suggestions for improving: study skills, time management, test-taking techniques, adjustment to college, etc.
  • Attending all required trainings and staff development workshops
  • Submitting required forms and documentation in a timely manner

Qualifications

Students interested in becoming study consultants must:

  • Be registered full-time juniors, seniors, or graduate students at Johns Hopkins University
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.33 or above, with at least a 3.0 GPA from the semester prior to application
  • Have a strong desire to help other students succeed academically
  • Be willing to work with a minimum of two students each semester
  • Commit to their assignment for the duration of the semester
  • Have effective study, organizational, and time management skills
  • Demonstrate excellent communication, listening, and interpersonal skills
  • Provide two or more references from faculty, former supervisors, coaches, or academic advisors

Applications for study consultants are accepted at the end of each semester. If there is demand, new applications may also accepted at any point during a semester.

Training Program

The JHU Study Consulting Program has been recognized by the College Reading and Learning Association as a certified International Mentor Training Program. All study consultants must complete 10 hours of training in multiple aspects of peer mentoring. In addition, to become eligible for individual CRLA IPTPC Level I certification, a consultant must demonstrate 25 hours of satisfactory mentoring experience. Consultants will receive training in the following areas:
